Tizita

HANI SALIH ︎

Tizita.

To recall and reflect - a sense of nostalgia for times gone by. Tizita translates from Amharic literally to "memory" or "nostalgia". Tizita is perhaps best known as a sub-genre of music originating from a ballad sung, covered and re-imagined by Ethiopian musicians for generations. Themes of longing, lamentation and nostalgia are central to this genre. The music almost always carries within it a timelessness; A bittersweet wonder for times you had never experienced as if they were your own.

A short collage video made from images taken during a trip to Ethiopia in 2019 using a mixture of colour and black and white film.
